Common social media myths DEBUNKED 😤

Even dogs are on social media nowadays.

If you're not using organic social media in your marketing strategy, you're already behind.

There are all kinds of excuses that people give for avoiding posting on social media to grow their business. Don’t let any of these myths hold you back.

1. Only young people use social media

WRONG: 90% of Baby Boomers and 95% of Gen Xers use social media according to a recent study. Now, these generations don’t report the same negative mental health effects that Gen Z and Millennials report, but they’re online nonetheless.

83% of Gen Xers report spending up to an hour a day at least on social media. That’s up to 7 hours a week (minimum!) that they could be seeing your brand on their feeds. If you target market is Millennials and/or Gen Z, then duh. Even more of a reason to dive right in.

Don’t forget that Millennials are currently between 28 and 43 years old so your target demo might really be more ~hip and digital~ than you’re imagining them.

Obviously, there are other ways to reach older demographics, but if you target demo anyone under 78 years old, there’s a pretty good chance they are actually on socials with the rest of the population.

2. It costs $$$ to make social work for you

WRONG: When it comes to organic social media, you shouldn’t be spending money (unless it’s on a killer social media manager like me). “Organic” means that you generate engagement without any ad spend. You can post for free just like anyone else, and I would encourage you to shy away from spending money on social media advertising.

Why?

Everyone is sick and tired of being inundated with advertisements. People head to social media to get away from them.

Watching TV and an ad comes on? Pull out your phone and scroll.

Taking public transportation where ads plaster the walls? Pull out your phone and scroll.

Where are you reading your news? Probably not in a physical paper. On your phone, where your social communities are just clicks away.

People don’t open Facebook or Instagram to see ads. They want to be entertained, educated or get angry.

If your brand can make them feel any of these things, congratulations! You’re going to grow without wasting thousands of dollars on “digital advertising.”

Instead, (shameless plug) hire me. I’ll assess your businesses’ current social standing and come up with a strategy to bring actual value to your audience. They’ll see you more, click more and buy more.

3. I don’t need social media because I already have a website

Is your website optimized for mobile where 57% of internet users spend their time? If not, they’re looking you up on Facebook or Instagram–guaranteed.

Over 93% of brands acquire at least one new customer from a video they posted on socials, and 82% of consumers prefer when brands engage with them on social media.

Do you expect people to visit your website every day to see what you have going on? Of course not. You need to meet them where they are…SOCIAL MEDIA.

Is this feeling redundant yet?

4. Social media won’t work for me because I don’t know how to do it & I don’t have the time

Call me! You don’t need to ~post the most~ to see a positive return, as proven by the stats above.

More than half of online users are lurkers: people who observe but don’t typically post anything. Even fewer than that have worked in professional social media–which is different than posting about your dog/kid/dinner/football team/friends/outfits/garden/etc.

I’ve increased engagement for brands by over 300%, and I’ll do it for yours too.

5. It’s too late for me to build a social media following
